Brendon Glenn’s Death Due to Unjustified and Excessive Deadly Force

On May 5, 2015, an African American man by the name of Brendon Glenn, was shot and killed after being battered by police on the Venice boardwalk. The LAPD police officer who shot him, Officer Proctor, told investigators that he had seen Glenn’s hand touching the holster of his partner’s gun.

Proctor opened fire on Glenn. Due to video footage from a nearby establishment and a formal statement from his partner, this account did not line up with what happened at all. Glenn was seeing reaching back, but not on the side where the officer’s gun was safely holstered.

Attorney V. James DeSimone represented the family of Brendon Glenn in this incident of wrongful death, filing a case of police brutality against the City of Los Angeles. The family that Glenn left behind include his mother and a 4-year-old son that will now have to grow up without a father. “There’s just no way to undo this wrong […] you can’t bring someone’s life back,” said Attorney DeSimone in a statement to local news sources.

$4 Million Settlement Achieved for Glenn’s Family

After relentless representation, the team of Attorneys at V. James DeSimone Law achieved a $4 million settlement for Glenn’s family on Tuesday, December 13, 2016. The money will be split evenly between both the mother and the son. The reason for this high payout is due in part to LAPD Chief Charlie Beck’s recommendation that criminal charges be filed against the officer who shot Glenn, which the Police Commission agreed with, saying that Officer Proctor violated LAPD rules regarding the use of deadly force.

This settlement was one of three involving LAPD shootings of unarmed men. The total of all three settlements equals $8 million that the City Council has agreed to pay out.
